Land Use & Environmental Planning

Main content start

Land Use and Environmental Planning   (which includes cultural and biological resources) is responsible for overseeing land use entitlements and planning approvals, across all jurisdictions in which Stanford land is located. This includes oversight and monitoring of the General Use Permit, or GUP.

Land Use and Environmental Planning (LUEP) is your resource if:

  • Your project is affected by the General Use Permit (GUP)  , such as a change in overall square footage or a change in the number of beds
  • You require Architectural and Site Approval (ASA)
  • Your project involves ground disturbance, including landscaping, or might affect sensitive biological resources
  • Your project involves a site outside central campus requiring planning approval

Stanford has many cultural resources which are protected under local, state and federal regulations. As part of Land Use and Environmental Planning, the Department of Heritage Services   safeguards Stanford’s cultural resources which include archaeological sites and historic structures on Stanford lands. Heritage Services can assist you with questions involving Historic buildings (those more than 50 years old) or Archaeological sites, which are sometimes uncovered during construction.

Land Use and Environmental Planning tips:

  • Most DMP projects that require a Santa Clara County permit, do not require an ASA
  • The ASA process can take several months to complete, depending on project complexity
  • Contact Heritage Services in advance of any work if your project requires grading or trenching
