Environmental Health and Safety

Main content start

The main role of the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department is to provide health and safety risk management. In the area of hazardous materials, what you don’t know might harm you or others, as well as Stanford.  Before disturbing any building material or starting your project, you should contact EH&S to determine if any hazardous materials or conditions exist at your project site.

Some services provided by EH&S:

  • Testing for hazardous materials
  • Advising on construction regulations related to hazardous materials and vetting contractors
  • Estimating costs for hazardous material abatement
  • Performing inspections to ensure contractors' compliance
  • Reviewing Safety Data Sheets (SDS / MSDS) provided by contractors
  • Assisting with applications for special permits such as Closure permits and Hazardous Materials Management Plan and use permits
  • Escorting inspectors from other agencies (OSHA, EPA, etc.)
  • Reviewing design plans for Labs

Tips for EH&S:

  • Do not let contractors perform any exploratory work before EH&S has done a Hazardous Materials Assessment
  • You must provide information to contractors about hazardous materials in the building before they bid
  • Regulations for health and safety are complicated and often overlap, and EH&S is your resource for questions
